DIY Kitteh

A few years ago, I gave Master this blanket:

Master’s Blanket!

It covers about two couch cushions, and is 5′ tall.  It took me a year and a half to make, and it was my first blanket.  When I gave it to him, he laughed and said it was too small.  When he saw me tearing up he asked why I made it so small, and I said “It’s supposed to be a TV blanket. *sniffle*  And, it took me a year and a half to make you.  *sniffle*”.  At the time, I felt totally hurt, because I thought he didn’t like it.  He told me he thought it was well made, but just too small, but once I explained what a TV banket was (basically, something to cover your lap while you watch TV) he told me he loved it.  But, I always felt like it was kind of inadequate.

About a year ago, my mother gave me a ton of yarn, and me and Master decided we were going to use it to make him a new, bigger blanket. :)  It’s five hundred stitches across (crochet, no knitting), and each color has seven rows.  It’s a huge blanket, and basically, I couldn’t fit it all in a picture without folding it, but here is how it is coming along so far.

Master’s NEW blanket.

Here’s a close up:

Close up.

The orange is the bottom, and he has been choosing what colors he wants in what order.  I ran out of yarn when I got to the teal color, so he went to the store and chose this maroon one I’m adding onto it now.  It’s kind of fun, now that we have a craft store nearby, to have him pick up a skein of yarn on the way home from work, and not know what he has picked until he gets it here.  I know it’s going to take a looong ass time to get this blanket done, but I thought it would be cool to post a progress picture. :)

  1. Yay for crochet'd blankets :)

  2. Cool! I’ve knit myself a tv blanket (I can’t crochet) and it took me *forever*! After that I decided to stick to hats and socks, they’re much faster haha.

What kind of yarn are you using?

I wish I knew how to knit! My mom taught me how to crochet when I was a little girl, but yeah blankets do seem to take forever. I’m a lot faster at it now, but it still takes a while.

I’m using Red Heart yarn :)

  3. I’m trying to teach myself how to crochet, but I can’t seem to avoid the edges curling in as well as tapering.
    Good luck and have fun.
This isn’t supposed to be making fun– but right now it looks like a strip of bacon. *giggles* It’s really cool, I like it so far.

Hmm, if your rows are curling, you may be atitching too tightly, and the tapering thing is probably because you need to add an extra stitch whenever you come to the end of your row. If you don’t it tends to make your row a stitch less each time. Not sure if I typed that out right, it’s kind of hard to describe.

Lol! I think the bacon analogy is cute. <3 The whole blanket is going to be stripes, so I guess that's one BIG piece O bacon. ;))

  4. I like it. :)
